From Audition to Ovation: Ollie’s Les Misérables Triumph

We are incredibly proud to share the amazing achievement of Ollie, who stepped into the spotlight as the cheeky, brave, and streetwise Gavroche in Les Misérables at the Bristol Hippodrome. Performing in both matinee and evening shows on Thursday 14 and Sunday 16 August, Ollie brought one of musical theatre’s most beloved characters to life on a truly prestigious stage.

The production was seen by more than 14,000 people throughout its run and was met with five-star reviews and standing ovations every single night. Reviewers described the show as “absolutely exceptional,” “an outstanding and emotional performance,” and even “the best version of Les Mis ever seen”, a testament to the incredible passion, commitment, and talent of the cast.

At the heart of it all was Ollie’s remarkable performance. His portrayal of Gavroche, a character symbolizing courage, resilience, and loyalty, was deeply moving and undeniably powerful. With confidence, charisma, and emotional depth well beyond his years, Ollie brought a fresh energy to the role that captivated audiences from start to finish.

Landing such a role was no small feat. Ollie first auditioned in January, competing alongside more than 700 young hopefuls from across the South West. From there, he committed himself wholeheartedly to the rehearsal process, balancing school life with Sunday sessions and evening practices from February all the way through to opening night. His dedication, discipline, and sheer love for the stage have truly paid off.

Ollie is a huge asset to the QEH Drama Department and recently played a young Pip in our Great Expectations production.  His journey is no doubt just beginning, and if his performance in Les Mis is any indication, his future is incredibly bright.
