Sport at QEH

At QEH we believe in a ‘sport for all’ ethos. Whether that is taking part in one of the traditional team sports, such as rugby or cricket, or badminton, basketball, climbing or a fitness class, there is an option to suit all.

For those who are involved in team activities QEH has extensive sports facilities at nearby Failand. We have over 20 acres of fields at Failand. We have recently invested a further £2.7million in a project to redevelop our facilities to include a 3G artificial surface for rugby and football, sand dressed artificial surface for hockey and tennis as well as tarmac surfaces for netball and tennis.

In the Senior School (Years 7-11), boys will play rugby in the Autumn Term, football in the Spring Term and then cricket in the Summer Term.

Rugby

Rugby is played throughout the Autumn and, for Year 7’s, during the first half of the Spring term too. Rugby sevens is played, at a high level, in the second half of the Spring term culminating in the Rosslyn Park Sevens in March.

All boys in Years 7 and 8 participate in their first school term, with over 200 fixtures played each year against many of the best rugby playing schools in the South West. Many boys represent Bristol Schools at all levels. There have been annual tours over recent years, most recently to Canada.

Football

Football is well established at QEH and is the main sport for all year groups in the spring term. In all, teams will play over 200 fixtures against strong footballing schools across the South West, throughout a busy term. We run 1st – 6th senior football teams, ABC team at U14 & U15 and ABCD teams at U12 & U13.

We used to compete in the ISFA South West League and won the u18 league 8 years in a row before it recently ceased.

We also have an exciting partnership with Bristol City Football Club, who train and play academy matches on our pitches. Our football pitches are the envy of most schools. We have players who represent various football league academies, the county and others who have gone on to win professional contracts with league clubs.

Football tours are now a bi-annual event and recent tours have included Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Cricket

Cricket is the main sport for all boys in the Summer Term, with training and matches taking place at our extensive facilities at Failand and also at our onsite cricket nets.

We are fortunate to have expert coaching from our sports department and also Damian Forder, ex Gloucestershire and Glamorgan CCC.
