It’s completely natural for things to go unnoticed when they’re on your doorstep. This has always been true, but in today’s globally connected times it’s arguably more marked than ever. When events and sights can be broadcast in real time from just about anywhere in the world, it’s understandable that we might occasionally forget to pay attention to what’s happening down the road.

On the other hand: purses everywhere are getting tighter and we are collectively becoming aware of the cost of our fossil fuel use on the environment, making localised tourism a more attractive and viable pursuit for many.

Fortunately, for those of us living in or around the vibrant city of Bristol, we have an abundance of options to choose from – and, you never know, along the way you may even discover a side to this endlessly interesting city that you never even knew existed.

Things to do with Kids in Bristol

Graft

If you were to ask a random set of people to name something distinctive and unique about Bristol, it wouldn’t take long for someone to mention its tradition of street art. In fact, in some circles it is considered to be the European capital of graffiti. In keeping with this tradition, husband and wife Rob and Sophie Wheeler founded Graft in 2012 in order to bring their knowledge and passion for street art to a wider audience – and after a number of years working as teachers, they couldn’t have been more perfectly positioned to share their expertise.

Graft is made up of a small and dedicated team of professional artists and qualified teachers who are linked by their love of the culture and their passion for shared knowledge and experience. All of their workshops are bespoke events and promise an authentic and genuine slice of Bristol culture for those looking for things to with kids in Bristol.

Create Centre and Ecohome

Bristol has long been famed for its alternative scene. From culture to politics, it’s a city that prides itself in its inclusivity and innovation and is often at the forefront of progressive solutions to the problems of our modern age. Hardly surprisingly, it was named the European Green Capital in 2015 and the most sustainable city in the UK in 2021.

Create is a product of this history of ingenuity. It is a centre that exists to educate people about the environmental issues facing us today and to offer an insight into what a greener tomorrow might look like. An impressive range of events and exhibitions are held there and it offers a space for meetings and conferences for an array of ethical and environmental organisations – and even features its very own, purpose-built Ecohome to explore and inspire.

Given that Bristol is a city of forward-thinking individuals, it’s hardly surprising that Create is such a popular destination for locals and tourists alike – and while it’s certainly a good thing to have such a vibrant community of followers, the website states that booking is essential.

We The Curious

Located on Bristol’s iconic harbour side, We The Curious is a science centre that, according to the website, is ‘a bit like an indoor festival’. With over 200 activities spread over its two floors, visitors are able to interact with many of the exhibits – and can even take part in some of the experiments on display.

This philosophy of interaction and engagement is at the core of everything here, a venue that goes against the usual exhibition etiquette and encourages a more dynamic and vibrant environment. Exhibits can be handled, noise is welcomed, and fun is guaranteed.

M Shed

What better way to appreciate the city than to learn all about its history, its people and their stories? M Shed offers just such an educational experience, telling the story of the place through photographs, film, personal accounts and interesting, quirky objects.

As well as compiling this rare and unique collection on site, M Shed also runs various trips and activities from the venue, currently including a walk exploring the history of the old city of Bristol and a boat trip on the harbour on a 1935 diesel tug.

Being part of the Bristol Museums group, M Shed is a touching and intimate addition to the city’s cultural network and a must-see for anyone interested in its history – or the changing historical landscape of urban and maritime Britain in general.

And, best of all: it’s completely free to visit, although they do accept donations.

The Wave

If, like us, you thought that surfing was a pursuit that was restricted to the ocean, it’s time to think again. The Wave brings a piece of the coast to an inland environment, one where the waves themselves are technologically controlled, making them as reliable and safe as they are exciting and fun.

Physical exercise of every kind is known to benefit both physical and mental health – and the calming effects of the ocean have been well documented for a long time. The Wave brings these two beneficial activities together in an environment ideally suited for people of all ages and abilities, where a return to nature doesn’t mean giving over to its potential dangers.

Membership schemes are available for those who wish to make a regular visit and first-time, one-off experiences are welcomed too – and the price of the surf even includes the hire of a board and wetsuit, so everything you need to make the most of your day will be waiting for you.
