Financial Assistance

At Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital, we believe that financial circumstances should never prevent talented children from accessing an outstanding education.

Since our foundation in 1590, we have supported many pupils through financial assistance as it is important to our school that we are an inclusive and diverse community, accessible to children who would benefit from a QEH education regardless of socio-economic background. Through the work of our development team, we are actively working to increase the number of families we can help.

What is Financial Assistance?

Financial assistance is a tailored, means-tested award that helps families with school fees. Support can range from partial to full 100% fee assistance.

Before You Apply

Most families considering QEH will have already visited the school, either on one of our open events or on an individual tour. We encourage you to explore the school, meet our pupils and staff, and ask any questions you may have.

If you have not yet visited, we warmly invite you to book a visit or attend one of our upcoming open events.

Who is Eligible?

Available to pupils joining Year 7 (11+) and above.
Based on family income and capital assets (net of liabilities / debts).
All families are encouraged to apply if they believe they might qualify.

How to Apply

Submit Your Application for a Place at QEH

When completing our online application form, please tick the ‘financial assistance’ box to indicate your interest. Once your application is received, our Finance department will email you our financial survey.

Complete the Financial Survey

Please complete and return this promptly to assistance@qehbristol.co.uk to ensure your application is considered. Alongside the financial survey, parents/guardians will also be asked to submit supporting documentation such as recent pay slips, tax returns, and details of savings or investments to provide a full picture of the family’s financial situation. The information required is included in the financial assistance application form.

Submit by Deadline

All financial assistance applications should be submitted by 5 January 2027 for consideration for entry in September 2027.

All financial assistance applications will be reviewed post the application deadline in January.

We understand that exceptional circumstances can arise, so if you miss this deadline, please contact the Finance Office (assistance@qehbristol.co.uk) as early as possible to discuss your situation.

Assessment Process

After the application deadline, the Finance Department will review all completed financial surveys and supporting documentation.
You may be invited to a financial interview with the Director of Finance and Operations and the Head.
Following the financial interview, the outcome of your financial assistance application will be communicated within the offer of place letter, sent out in the first week of February 2027.

Award Reviews

All financial assistance awards are reviewed annually to ensure they remain appropriate to your family’s circumstances and aligned with the school’s charitable objectives. The school will contact current families to start the renewal process in the autumn term which will require the form to be re-completed along with updated supporting information.

Please note that demand often exceeds the level of total funding available, so thorough applications are important.

The Opportunity Fund

At QEH, we believe an exceptional education should be accessible to everyone. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the QEH Opportunity Fund ensures that pupils receiving significant financial assistance can fully participate in all aspects of school life.

What is the Opportunity Fund?

The fund provides discretionary financial support to families receiving transformational financial assistance (75% fee remission or above). While financial assistance covers tuition, this fund helps bridge the gap for essential additional costs. To support as many families as possible, awards are normally made once per pupil and are subject to availability. Naturally, all applications and enquiries are handled with the utmost discretion.

What can the fund assist with?

The fund is designed to help with additional expenses that arise during the school year. This includes assisting with the cost of required school clothing and uniform, helping with the daily commute to QEH, and ensuring pupils can attend vital curriculum-related educational visits.

Once students have joined the school, they can apply for the fund via their Head of Year, or via the Director of Development.

We believe that, in the earlier years of school, boys learn best this way.

We aim to produce young adults who are well-educated not just well-qualified. Small classes, a positive work ethic and teachers with a real passion for their subject create a learning environment where students are stretched, not stressed.

We’ll give you lots of freedom and independence but we also recognise there may be times when you need support. If you do, we’ll be there to help.

From the outside QEH may appear daunting, especially for new boys to the school. On the inside, however, it is a totally different story.

Year 9 is distinctly defined at QEH, being between the Lower and Middle School and offering boys unique challenges and opportunities.

The transition through the Middle School is a pivotal period between the early years of secondary school and university preparation in the Sixth Form.

Medical and Health

Our contract caterers, Holroyd Howe, provide first-class lunches for our pupils. These offer a healthy, balanced, nutritious diet each day for our pupils. Holroyd Howe also provide excellent breakfasts, which are available for pupils to purchase, and catering for special functions.

QEH cares about the way our students develop as human beings. All pupils in Years 7 to 10 take part in an exciting and meaningful programme that ensures our students are equipped to live a responsible and fulfilling life.

Sport

The Performing Arts flourish at QEH.

Music is at the heart of school life at QEH and plays a key role both socially and academically. Our aim is to offer everyone the opportunity to get involved in the many varied musical activities we provide.

With our dedicated music studio, we offer workshops for pupils to learn the basics of how to use a recording studio and also give them the opportunity to record their own ensembles or solo performances.

QEH Theatre is a striking modern building, with a comfortable three-sided auditorium seating 220, creating an intimate and dynamic atmosphere.

Sometimes students learn as much out of the classroom as in it.

In recent years the programme for Outdoor Pursuits has become a special strength of the school.

QEH prides itself on the range of activities it provides, reflecting the wide interests and talents of the pupils and the commitment of the staff.

QEH prides itself on offering a comprehensive range of trips and educational visits, designed both to enhance the pupils’ learning and stimulate their inquisitiveness.

We are delighted that our pupils have been successful in their efforts to gain top GCSE grades after 18 months of Covid-related disruption to learning. This year’s exam success is a result of the pupils’ commitment to learning, ably supported by both teachers and parents.

Welcome to Sixth Form

Your time in the Sixth Form provides the foundation for the rest of your life.

Whether you want to do some reading, focus on that all-important essay, or relax and catch up with your friends, the purpose-built Sixth Form centre ticks all the boxes.

Currently Sixth Form students are expected to study four A-level subjects in Year 12 and then complete full A-levels by continuing with at least three of these.

Your success in the wider world after school depends in part on your ability to take responsibility, be proactive, learn from your mistakes, and work alongside others to make things happen.

We’ll give you lots of freedom and independence but we also recognise there may be times when you need support. If you do, we’ll be there to help.

In Sixth Form, there are many opportunities to be involved in Music and Drama.

Rupert Heathcote, Head at QEH, has today paid tribute to the students and staff at QEH for their hard work over the last two years.

One of the most important features of the Sixth Form at QEH is how it prepares its students for Higher Education and beyond.

Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital was founded in 1590 as a ‘hospital or place for the bringing up of poor children or orphans being men children as such shall be born in the city of Bristol…’

The Friends of QEH is an active group of teachers and parents who help to build the school community from Juniors right through to Sixth Form.

QEH is located in Berkeley Place, Clifton. The Junior School can be found at 9 Upper Berkeley Place, in the terrace of Georgian houses behind the QEH Senior School building.
