Scholarships at QEH Bristol

At QEH, we believe exceptional talent and potential deserve to be recognised and nurtured. Our scholarship programme celebrates outstanding potential across academics, the arts, and sport, offering pupils a tailored path to excel and contribute to our school community.

Available QEH Scholarships by Entry Year

We offer a range of specialist pathways designed to recognise potential, and to inspire and challenge pupils:

  • Year 7 and Year 9 Entry: Academic, Music, and Sport Scholarships.
Year 12 (Sixth Form) Entry: Academic, Art, Drama, Music, Product Design, and Sport Scholarships.
  • Scholarship awards at QEH are honorary and come with an annual financial grant to help pupils invest directly in their passions, whether that means specialist coaching, masterclasses, or high-level equipment.
  • We are equally committed to ensuring a QEH education remains accessible. Families seeking financial support can apply for our means-tested financial assistance (bursaries), which offer up to 100% fee coverage from Year 7 onwards. Read more about means-tested financial assistance at QEH.

Scholarship Grants at a Glance

In addition to dedicated mentoring and extension opportunities, all QEH scholars receive an annual grant once enrolled:

Year 7 & Year 9 Scholars: £200 per year to support talent development.
Sixth Form (Year 12) Scholars: £250 per year to further advanced studies or pursuits.

Please note: Scholarships provide honorary recognition and grant funding rather than tuition fee reductions. Fee support is managed separately through our comprehensive means tested financial assistance programme.

Scholarships in detail

11+ and 13+ Academic Scholarships

Awarded based on a boy’s performance in the 11+ and 13+ entrance examination. Every candidate who sits the entrance examination is automatically entered for an academic scholarship. It is based on exceptional entrance examination results and potential shown in interview.

They will be expected to contribute to the academic life of the school throughout their time at QEH.

After the entrance testing dates have passed, applicants that have performed at scholarship level will be contacted by the admissions team.

11+ and 13+ Music Scholarships

Awarded for able musicians at 11+ and 13+. We look for all-round musical talent and potential. Applicants must be at least Grade 3 (for 11+) and Grade 5 (for 13+) on one of their instruments, in addition to demonstrating sound academic performance in the entrance examinations.

The audition will consist of a performance and interview. Applications must be made by the deadline. Two references should also be included, one of which must be a current music teacher. Candidates will be invited to audition.

11+ and 13+ Sports Scholarships

Awarded for talented sportsmen joining at Year 7 and Year 9. We are looking for all-round sporting ability and potential. It is likely that they will play sport for a local club and may be playing at or working towards county or Avon schools level in one or two of the main sports of the school — rugby, football and cricket — in addition to demonstrating sound academic performance in the entrance examinations.

Applicants will need to show an ability to learn and a willingness to further their sporting career. They will complete a series of fitness and skill tests and take part in an interview with a member of the Sports department. Applications must be made by the deadline. Two references should also be included.

Sixth Form Scholarships

Sixth Form scholarships are available for students of exceptional talent.

All candidates for scholarships will be tested by interviews and, in some cases, a practical assessment. Interviews will be conducted by the relevant Head of Department and Senior Staff. Awards will be made on the basis of these assessments and are conditional on the candidate achieving specified grades at GCSE level.

Existing QEH pupils will be eligible to apply as long as they are not already in receipt of a scholarship. Internal candidates will be subject to the same assessment procedure as external candidates.

Scholarships may be offered in: Art · Arts and Social Sciences · Drama · Languages (Ancient and Modern) · Literature · Maths · Music · Science (including Computer Science) · Sport

To be considered for the award of a Sixth Form academic scholarship, candidates must be predicted to achieve grade 8 or higher in the relevant subject.

Autumn 2026 Open Events

Discover all that QEH has to offer at one of our upcoming open events in September and October. They cover Sport, Junior School, Senior School and our Sixth Form.

You run a remarkable school with an ethic that is truly unique. It shines through in each and every boy. There’s something in the way the teachers know every boy’s talent and in the way the boys support each other (while also embracing real competition!) that’s just remarkable.
